Founded in 1945 after the "need for mountaineering in Universities as a means for a student's self-relisation and self-expression" was identified?? ULMC is now one of the oldest clubs remaining in the union. Throughout the 50's & 60's ULMC retained high membership figures co-ordinating the trips for the college based clubs, then as personal transport became more common place, the collegiate clubs grew in popularity as the need to co-ordinate was removed. It wasn't long before ULMC set about obtaining a hut in the Ogwen valley in North Wales to provide cheap accommodation. Later a few past members decided that a graduate club would be a good idea, with the aim of providing a bank of experience accessible to ULMC and allowing the friendships developed in ULMC to remain after graduation, hence the formation of ULGMC. Members of the graduate club then set about obtaining a hut in the peak district, Fallcliffe Cottage.
Throughout its history the club has been extremely active with many expeditions to the Alps and further afield, such as Greenland, and the Karakorams. One member being Eric Shipton, who whilst still in the university, attended an early expedition to Everest.
